If you can’t afford an attorney, and you must go through the divorce on your own then you are called a Pro Se (representing yourself).

A Pro Se is  held to the same standard as an attorney in the divorce proceedings.  Although, many Judges are a little more understanding and patient with a Pro Se.  A word to the wise, don’t rely upon the “I didn’t go to law school” card because the Judge, like all parties involved are bound to follow the Rules of Procedure, Rules of Evidence, Family Law Statutes, Supreme Court and Appellate Court decisions and the Local Rules for each circuit.
